Nestor (he/they/siya) is an assistant professor of developmental psychology and of human development at the University of Rochester. He is the PI of the FAM&I Lab, leading studies on family-youth interactions and their relations with youth psychological, academic, and identity outcomes. Nestor was born and raised in Manila, Philippines, immigrated to Southern California (SoCal) in his early teens, and eventually finished his Ph.D. in Education, Human Development in Context at the University of California, Irvine. In his spare time, he loves rough-housing with his dog Hero, visiting vineyards and cider houses around Upstate New York with his husband Jonah, watching local Rochester theatre and drag performances, and (re)learning how to cook SoCal-based dishes.

Doctoral Students

Ziqin (she) is a Ph.D. student in human development at the University of Rochester. Her research interests encompass parenting dynamics and adolescent development, with a focus on social-emotional and academic growth. Ziqin was born and raised in Wuhan, China and completed her master’s degree in psychology at University College London in the UK. Outside of academia, she finds joy in spending time with her three Shiba Inus, also known as the Oreo family. Ziqin also appreciates visiting art museums and exhibitions, indulging in iced Americanos during brunch with friends, and exploring diverse cultures and destinations with her family.

Jingyi (she/her) is a PhD student in the developmental psychology program at the University of Rochester. Her research interests center on cross-cultural parental feedback and children's academic motivation. Jingyi was born and raised in Beijing, China. She finished her undergraduate degree at Mount Holyoke College. She enjoys hiking, biking, playing tennis, and singing karaoke in her spare time.

Glen (she/her) is a Ph.D. student in Human Development at the University of Rochester. Her research interests focus on how creative arts and social-emotional learning (SEL) can support students’ self-expression, emotional well-being, and sense of belonging. Glen was born and raised in Wenzhou, China. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance from Kent State University, and later completed master’s degrees in Music Education at University College London and in Human Development and Family Studies at the University of Rochester. In her spare time, she enjoys playing sports, traveling, writing, stage directing, and developing original creative work.

Lindsay (she/her) is pursuing her EdD in Human Development at the University of Rochester. Her research interests include studying the practical application and benefits of child-directed play in children’s homes, schools, and communities to build life-long social-emotional competencies and self-efficacy. Lindsay grew up playing in the foothills of the Smokey Mountains in Tennesee, the beaches of Florida, and finally in the suburban backyards of New Jersey (her family moved a lot!). She earned her BA in History from Northeastern University in Boston, MA and her MS in Teaching Literacy from Touro College in New York City. She went on to teach elementary school in New York City before settling down in Rochester, NY with her family. Lindsay now works as the program coordinator for Primary Project, a play-based intervention, at Children’s Institute. In her free time, Lindsay can usually be found playing in her garden, cooking with her daughter, hanging out with her book club, or traveling to visit family and friends.

Zhizheng "Allan" Zhang

Zhizheng Zhang (he/him) is a master’s student in Human Development at the University of Rochester. His research interests center on the developmental psychology of children and adolescents, with a particular focus on the adversities that hinder students’ achievements at school. He believes that what is important is not only the interpretation of research results, but also "make meaning" of it. Research can serve as a powerful tool to advocate for changes that support youth development. Zhizheng was born in China and pursued double majors in psychology and philosophy during his undergraduate at the University of Toronto. In his free time, he enjoys reading, exercising, and fishing.
